Orange County is known for tourism, beautiful beaches, lots of shopping and great food. The Restaurant scene is endless in OC and foodies can now reminisce about the good times at Fountain Valley’s newest addition “The Recess Room“.
Previously a Coco’s Restaurant, “The Recess Room” has been transformed into a modern Gastro pub with a throwback style reminiscent of hopscotch. Every wall has a story and special design features include: a ceiling resembling a 1960s redwood basketball floor, a chain curtain mimicking playground swings, tables using 100-year-old wood from a Kentucky tobacco farm, and a hostess table that was formerly a 1900s European newspaper shear.
On a recent media tasting, we tried some of the mock libations that The Recess Room offers. Starting from Left To Right:
- “A periwinkle in Time”-Lavender Lemonade made with coconut water
- “Mauna Loa Mule” – Hand crafted ginger beer, grilled pineapple, lime.
- “Impeach me Bellini” – White Peach Puree, sparkling peach juice.
NOTE: At opening The Recess Room will be serving food only. The cocktail program will launch at a later date
Recess Room Appetizers
I love trying new things and experimenting with my palate when I go out to eat, and I had plenty of opportunity to do this at the Recess Room. Their unique selection of appetizers gives guests a chance to try something different.
My favorite was the DIY corn Elote. Sweet corn, bacon, cotija, cilantro lime zest aioli, and chipotle aioli come served on a beautiful wood plank and the flavors are amazing! I also highly suggest the Burrata with heirloom tomato, balsamic, micro cilantro, and shallot chips. The colors in this salad are incredible!
They also serve a Charcuteri Board with wild boar salami, duck prosciutto, raw manchego, truffle brie, morbier, and honeycomb. We did also order the Beef Chicharon (beef tendon) which was interesting, but definitely an aquired taste.
Bone Marrow is a popular item on the menu here and you can try it on the Bone Marrow Burger. This hearty dish has akaushi beef, applewood bacon, arugula, milk bun, and beer batter fries.
You can also sample bone marrow in the Bone Marrow Mac N Cheese. It’s made with Cali-cal cheddar, goat cheese, orecchiette, and bechamel which will send your taste buds into a frenzy!
If steak is your love language be sure to order the Hanger Filet Chimichurri steak. Beware though, this steak is cooked more on the rare side. This is medium and it was still a bit pink for me so medium well might be the way to go,
If you like white meat the Aioli Chicken Sandwich is served on delicious Hawaiian Rolls with a side a tangy coleslaw and crunchy french fries.
End your meal on a sweet note with butter pecan ice cream, espresso, and fried donuts. Or you can try the Cereal Milk Creme Brulee with frosted flakes, cinnamon toast crunch, strawberry.
